Year 1 & 2

Welcome to our learning in year 1 & 2 - Autumn 1

Welcome back to the new year, and a very warm welcome into Year 1 for last year’s Reception children!  It’s lovely to see everyone settling in so nicely to their new classes and routines.

This term on the ground floor our topic is Pirates, and we will be looking at lots of history – learning about famous pirates and thinking about life on ships.  We will be going on a fantastic trip to the Maritime Museum, where we will meet a “pirate” and participate in a hands-on workshop.  We also have an exciting Pirate Day planned, where we will all come in dressed as pirates and take part in activities such as a treasure hunt!

We will also be doing geography and learning about islands; what it may be like to live there and what the climate is like.  Our art will link into this as we will be designing and making 3D islands.

For Literacy, we will be reading A New Home for a Pirate, by Ronda Armitage, of which we will be writing a retell, and The Night Pirates, by Peter Harris, and will write a character description of Tom.

In Numeracy, we will be looking at basic place value, shape, and addition.  Science is all about materials, and we will be thinking about which materials float and which sink, in order to make a raft for a pirate.

In PE, we will be looking at and learning ball skills, as well as going over to the Pleasaunce for a weekly run.  In RE, we will be thinking about belonging.
