Year 1 & 2

Welcome to our learning in year 1 & 2 - Autumn 2

Welcome back to the colder, darker half of the term.

This term on the ground floor our topic is Let Me Entertain You, and we will be looking at entertainment in its many and varying forms.

In Literacy we have been reading Lin Yi’s Lantern by Brenda Williams; we have been creating our own Chinese market stalls based on the story and invited the children from Reception to come and buy our wares!

We will also be writing letters to persuade people – namely Mr. Vousden! - to visit the circus, thinking about the power of 3 and how that helps with our persuasive writing, and the circus will be the theme for Science this terms; we will be looking at materials and experimenting what would be best to make a big top tent from and why.  For Literacy, we will also be reading Where’s My Teddy, by Jez Alborough, and will write retells of the story.

In DT we will be designing and creating our own sock puppets, and for ICT we will learn about early computer games, and may get the chance to test these out.  Can you remember any – Pong, Tetris, PacMan, Sonic…?!  In History, we will be learning about the history of toys since the Victorian times.

Later in the term we will be visiting St. James’ Church at Blackheath Standard where we will experience a hands-on retelling of the Christmas story.

Year 2 have already begun to attend Forest School – they have been learning all about Autumn and Winter, and observing the changes found in nature at this time of year.

In Numeracy, we have been looking at division, as well as money – handling and ordering coins.

Christmas concert rehearsals will also be starting over the next few weeks!
